Transport
All vehicles, including but not limited to cars, vans, motorcycles, bicycles, must be driven with great care on the University estate.
The University Security Team monitor the campus via CCTV, and alongside our Transport Team, carry out regular patrols, however you need to consider your safety whilst traveling to, from and around campus. The page below provides tips on how you can be prepared for transport safety.
Although private property, the University aligns with the law and government guidance, therefore strict obeying of the Highway Code, including set speed limits, is essential on campus.
Top Tips for Transport Safety
- Plan where you are going, how you are travelling and how you are going to get back, before leaving home.
- Tell someone in your household or a friend, where you are going and when you will be back so they know when to expect you.
- At night, keep to well-lit streets and where possible, walk with friends.
- Use the bus or share a taxi with friends.
- Travel in a group with your friends where possible.
- Campus Security are able to provide a walking escort around campus or to and from the Falmer train station/ bus stops.
- Wear bright clothing if you are walking or cycling at dusk and night-time, or even better reflective clothing if you can. Do not forget to take a torch with you.
- Do not listen to your music or audio’ or if you do only use one earpiece and keep the volume down so you can hear approaching traffic and people around you.
- Be prepared for adverse weather, especially during the winter months.
Travel at Night and During Adverse Weather
BE BRIGHT BE SEEN.
Travel during winter months can be very different to the rest of the year and you need to be prepared for dark nights and changes in the weather (including ice and snow). The weather can change after you have left home so ensure you check the weather forecast but do not rely on that alone.
- Delay your journey, if possible, to allow temperatures to rise and ice or snow to melt
- Avoid foot and cycleways in the shade. It takes longer for ice or snow to melt in the shade.
- Always wear appropriate footwear and warm, reflective/bright clothing
- Ensure that you have a torch or lights so motorists and others can see you.
Visit our adverse weather pages for further information on how the University manages bad weather on campus or the Transport Team pages on snow and ice management.
E-Scooters and E-Skateboards
E-scooters and E-skateboards are not permitted on campus or in University buildings (inclusive of University of Sussex residential accommodation). Please refer to the guidance document below that outlines the legal and safety reasons as to why they are not permitted.

Electric Bikes (E-Bikes) in Residential Housing
Electric bikes use large lithium-ion batteries which can present a risk of serious fire or explosion in certain circumstances. While these can be used safely, there have been several incidents and tragic fires in homes involving lithium-ion batteries in these devices.
The position of the University is that these devices are NOT PERMITTED anywhere within residential buildings due to the increased risk these pose to safe storage, charging, and evacuation in an emergency.
