Parker Nicholls has suggested that IDM isn’t a genre term, but rather it “is better suited to describe a philosophy of music making and a way of knowing and being that emphasizes creative individuality and a critical interrogation of the passive consumption of cultural commodities.”  With this project, Joseph wanted to explore this statement and uncover whether he agrees with Nicholls. Joseph’s two research questions were: (1) How can the incorporation of IDM techniques and ideas assist in creating a new and original sound for hip hop music? (2) What impact does the intended inclusion of vocals have on the instrumental given that IDM is often instrumental and hip-hop is rarely so?
