Welcome
I’d like to offer a warm welcome to all new researchers embarking upon their doctoral journey at Sussex this Autumn. I look forward to meeting many of you at the Doctoral School welcome event on 28th September, where you’ll get the chance to meet other new PhD students from across the University and find out about the diverse opportunities available to you during your time at Sussex.
As our returning doctoral researchers will know, making the most of induction – both within your School of study and across the University – is essential for a successful start to your doctoral degree. Take this time to get to know your fellow researchers, find your feet in research, and meet with your supervisors to refine your project and identify any training needs you may have.
Over the next few weeks, we also hope you’ll take some time out to review the Doctoral School website, where you’ll discover a wealth of information relevant to all Sussex doctoral researchers, a range of funding opportunities and our popular Researcher Development Programme - a comprehensive programme of training workshops, webinars and online modules designed specifically for doctoral researchers at Sussex.
Time spent reviewing the Handbook and Regulations for Doctoral Researchers available on the Research Student Administration Office website will also be time well-spent, as it not only provides the regulatory information you need to be aware of, but is also a really useful resource for identifying what is expected of you in your first year and beyond.
Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best in your doctoral studies at Sussex, and to those of you who are returning to Sussex this year, a productive and rewarding 2016-17.
Professor George Kemenes - Director of the Doctoral School
