At present, Michael’s own research interests relate to China’s colonial history, the Soong Sisters, the relationship of Fu Lei and Fu Cong, and the life and works of Zhou Youguang. Michael is very much fascinated by modern Chinese history and its human narratives.
Prior to his association with the Sussex Asia Centre he was the Managing Editor at Penguin Random House in China. He has worked with a wide range of Chinese authors including Mo Yan, Bi Feiyu, Wang Anyi and Sheng Keyi. Furthermore, he has worked with and published the works of Lao She, Daniele Varè, Frances Wood, Paul French, Robert Bickers, Jonathan Fenby, David Bandurski and John Garnaut, as well as many other talented authors and academics.
