Welcome to UK Food Systems CDT at Sussex!

The UK Food Systems Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) aims to develop the next generation of food system change makers who will create a healthy and sustainable food future.  There are 9 partner Universities and Institutions: Natural Resources Institute at the University of Greenwich (lead institute), University College London, Royal Veterinary College University of London, Institute of Biological, Environmental and  Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth University, Centre for Food Policy at City, University of London, Brunel University London, National Institute of Applied Biology,Rothamsted Research, and the University of Sussex.

This cross-disciplinary CDT is funded by the UK Research and Innovation Council (UKRI).

As a Food Systems CDT PGR,you will have access to: 

  • a scholarship covering fees anda  living allowance for 4 years (full-time)
  • additional funding for a laptop, and up to £5000 pa for research and  training costs (conferences, participant costs, fieldwork, consumables)
  • subject specific training and wider professional development (summer schools; online seminars)
  • associate partners from government, business and civil society organisations as part of the UKFS-CDT Academy
  • a three month placement outside academia

  • Fee waiver and payment of stipend/maintenance allowances
  • Organising your placement
  • Changes to your scholarship (part-time registation, parental or sick leave, taking a break from your PhD, starting a placement)
  • Claiming Disabled Student Allowance (DSA)
  • Accessing additional funding for research and training or fieldwork costs, and getting your expenses reimbursed
