Module information
This programme takes place over one module:
Session One
- Gender Equality and The Law
Module code: IS433
On this programme, you’ll look at the relationship between law and gender.
You’ll explore different areas where law interacts with, and regulates, gender relations, while also introducing feminist legal theory. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of current affairs.
The larger areas of study include:
- reproductive rights (abortion, surrogacy, and new reproductive technologies)
- sexual violence
- body image and pornography
- prostitution
- parity democracy
- maternity rights
The module is framed around feminist theory. You’ll gain a basic understanding of how this can be applied to law and the impact of laws upon gender equality.
This is a first-year module. You won’t be required to have a background in Law or Politics. You’ll benefit from the research expertise in the School of Law, Politics and Sociology including to the School’s research centres of:
- Centre of Gender Studies
- Centre for Human Rights Research
- Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence
Learning outcomes:
- Acquire an understanding of the relationship between gender, law, and society
- Evaluate the impact of laws upon gender equality
- Develop a basic knowledge of how feminist theory can apply to the law
Teaching method: lecture, seminar, tutorial
Assessment: in class quizzes (25%), essay (65%), observation (10%)
