This module gives you an introduction to the principles and technologies of modern on-road passenger cars.
Topics will include:
- vehicle dynamics and corresponding sub-systems including tyres, suspension and steering systems with the aim of modelling, simulation and control
- a brief comparison of on-road and off-road vehicles
- control systems including the powertrain, stability and safety control principles and techniques
- a brief introduction to autonomous vehicles including technologies for perception, localisation, path planning, communication and control.
Module learning outcomes
- A systematic understanding of operating principles of modern on-road cars including interpreting main parameters and performance graphs with the focus on analysis, modelling, simulation and control
- A systematic understanding of operating principles of vehicle sub-systems including modern tyres, HVAC system, steering and suspension systems
- Design of control strategies for modern cars to operate on roads safely
- Analysis of performance of vehicles and associated control strategies using comprehensive simulation environments.
