Spring teaching
This module introduces you to liberatory approaches to education and their fate following the globalisation of model education policies by Northern policy actors.
The first section of the module looks at:
- liberatory approaches to education implemented by anticolonial revolutionaries in the 20th century
- antiracist, liberatory education models developed by Black parents and educators in the UK and USA.
The second section of the module critically examines:
- the globalisation of particular models of education
- power dynamics involved in aid-funded education initiatives in the Global South.
The final section of the module:
- scrutinises the role of policy consultants in shaping education in the North and South
- explores possibilities for liberatory pedagogies in the present.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
