Environmental Perspectives on Development (L2103)

Spring teaching
What are the big environmental problems of today? What are the root causes of those problems? How are environmental problems experienced differently around the world?
This module seeks to examine these questions, exploring the relationships between the environment and development. It examines historical perspectives on environment and development, illustrating continuities and changes in policies related to the environment. And it explores a number of key environmental questions such as:
- the impact of population change
- how global food systems impact the environment
- what approaches are being used to reduce global carbon emissions.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
