On this module, you'll examine thinkers and doers whose lives and work help explain the way we live today. You'll explore how inequality and poverty arose by design rather than chance, and uncover the deep roots behind stories of human rights abuses and failures in development.
You’ll read original texts from key thinkers alongside supporting materials, gaining insights into how their ideas shaped the world and how they can help unravel global complexities. This module provides a broad understanding of influential approaches to development and their relevance under global capitalism.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
