Autumn and spring teaching

This module gives you an introduction to the legal rules governing the acquisition and transfer of private rights in land. It covers aspects of the law which form the framework of landholding in England, and situates these rules in social, economic and environmental context.

Topics may include:

  • the doctrines of estates and tenure
  • definitions of “land” and “property”
  • transfer of rights in land, and the role of equity and the trust
  • land registration
  • adverse possession
  • leasehold estates
  • rights in security
  • third party rights (easements, freehold covenants)
  • co-ownership.

Assessment

15%: Examination (Multiple choice questions)
85%: Written assessment (Essay)

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 50 hours of contact time and about 250 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26.
