Culture in Context: Introducing the Creative Industries (V4060)

15 credits, Level 4

Autumn teaching

This module introduces you to the Creative Industries—what they are, where they come from, and why they matter. Weekly workshops include a mix of interactive lectures, discussions, and case studies.

You’ll also hear from industry professionals, including experts from our partners at Brighton Festival, who will talk about core roles in the creative industries and how they connect to the topics we cover in the module.

You'll learn about key themes like access, inclusion, sustainability, and the value of culture. You’ll also get an overview of areas you’ll explore further in Year 2 placements, such as technical production, programming, fundraising, operations and marketing.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
