Numerical Modelling and Engineering Simulations (H7137)

15 credits, Level 5

Spring teaching

Numerical modelling of engineering systems is essential to solving the complex problems faced by the modern world. As the size and complexity of a system increases, analytical hand-calculations become insufficient and indeed some problems are impossible using a purely analytical approach.

This module will equip you to tackle complex engineering problems and confidently apply the appropriate numerical techniques, whilst recognising their limitations and the impact these have.

Topics include:

  • numerical solution techniques
  • curve fitting and analysis
  • linear and non-linear equation root finding
  • numerical differentiation and integration
  • applied IVP and BVP solution techniques
  • building numerical programming competency

Computer based lab sessions will deliver practical, hands-on experience with commercial software.

Topics include:

  • numerical solution of systems of linear algebraic equations
  • curve fitting and interpolation techniques
  • linear and non-linear equation root finding
  • numerical differentiation and integration
  • preparation and solution of Initial Value and Boundary value problems, including application of finite difference techniques
  • applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 55 hours of contact time and about 95 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
