Autumn teaching
You should be able to work on your own in the target language (TL) at level B2-C1 (Independent-Proficient User) of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
Building on your existing skills, this module aims to:
- enable you to understand and mediate the main ideas and detail within extended discourse, to organise discourse and to communicate effectively in the TL, with fluency, confidence and spontaneity
- provide opportunities to practice understanding, communication and mediation in the TL using the four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing at a proficient level
- consolidate and develop complex TL language structures, syntax and specialised glossaries to allow consistent accuracy and control using the TL;
- analyse aspects of the social and cultural background of the language in a professional context, through various activities and materials, using text, audio, audio-visual and digital media.
You'll have the chance to focus on translation and interpretation activities. These will include subject-specific discussions, text handling and analysis through both authentic and specially prepared textual and audio-visual materials. Working individually and in groups, you will have opportunities to practise oral and written mediation skills suited to reports, meetings, visits, presentations and speeches.
This module is at level C1 (Proficient User) of the CEFR for languages.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
