Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll explore the evolving nature of terrorism and the challenges of countering it in a global context. You’ll critically engage with key debates in academic, policy, legal, and practitioner circles on terrorism and counter-terrorism strategies.
Key topics include:
- the transnational and national dimensions of terrorism, including recruitment, financing and operational activities
- the roles and responsibilities of governments, police, intelligence services and the media in counter-terrorism
- legislative responses to terrorism and their effectiveness
- connections between organised crime and terrorism
- responses to far-right terrorism
- supporting and protecting victims of terrorism.
You’ll also examine empirically informed case studies and research methodologies to understand the impact of research on policy and legal reform.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
