Children's Rights and Legal Frameworks (X3231)
30 credits, Level 5
Autumn teaching
This module provides you with a foundation in key legal and policy frameworks, affecting work with children and young people in a range of contexts.
The module will be structured using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This gives you a strong focus on the global reach of children's rights and legal frameworks. Examples are drawn from national and international contexts, and will be considered from historical, cultural, political and social perspectives.
Some of the areas you'll explore include:
- the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms
- the European Social Charter
- the UN Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (as this applies to girls)
- comparative approaches to child policy and legal frameworks in the EU
- child protection procedures in the UK with reference to specific case studies.
- legal frameworks and polices around migration and the status of unaccompanied children from other countries in the UK.
- statutory duties relating to 'vulnerable' groups in the UK eg: Looked After Children.
