Gender and Development: Theory, Concepts and Issues (L2104)

Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll explore how development processes are shaped by and impact gender dynamics and relations. You’ll be introduced to key concepts for analysing social relations between women and men across different cultural, economic, and political contexts.
You’ll examine topics such as:
- the nature of gender inequality
- the household as a social construct
- concepts of power and empowerment.
While providing a theoretical foundation through debates on the household and the gender division of labour, you'll also cover substantive and policy-related topics, including:
- poverty
- labour markets
- women’s employment
- migration
- globalisation.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
