Opportunities beyond your degree

Your degree unlocks experiences, from immersive research placements and vibrant community outreach to building lifelong connections through societies and inspiring the next generation of mathematicians.

Research placement

One of our flagship courses where you’ll explore mathematics in a unique way.

On your research placement you’ll dive deeper into mathematical concepts and apply them to real-world problems. You’ll develop critical thinking, creativity and independence, while building technical and communication skills. You’ll also work closely with faculty, explore cutting-edge ideas and gain a competitive edge for further studies or career paths.

“The research placement gave me the chance to see what a career in academia could be like. It's great to be given the independence to research something that interests you, as you can choose which area of mathematics you would like to research. The summer projects are also the perfect way to prepare you for your master's project. This has made my final year a lot less stressful and given me the chance to delve deeper into my research.” - Rob Maidment, MMATH with RP.

Junior Research Assistantships (JRA)

Become a top young researcher with the skills and expertise for a successful research career.

You’ll work with world-renowned academics, receive a bursary so you can work on your research full time and gain real-world experience.

Widening Participation

The Widening Participation team at Sussex supports learners who are under-represented in higher education. It helps students make informed choices about their future. Students can join this team in an ambassador role, contributing a range of activities throughout the academic year.

Mathematics outreach

Mathematics outreach is vital for inspiring a love of learning and demonstrating the power of math in everyday life. It doesn’t just benefit those who receive it, either: outreach provides a unique opportunity for students who deliver it, too.

By sharing their knowledge with younger audiences or the public, students deepen their understanding, improve their communication skills and develop confidence in presenting complex ideas. Outreach also fosters a sense of purpose and community: students see firsthand how their passion for mathematics can spark a curiosity and excitement in others.

If you’re interested in public engagement, inspiring younger students to pursue maths, learning fun mathematics beyond the curriculum or interested in a teaching career, you can apply to be an outreach leader with us.

Sussex University Maths Society (SUMS)

SUMS is a society made primarily for maths students but open to anyone looking to have some fun and forget about the stresses of university life.

The society meets once a week and do events from board game nights to movie nights. It’s a great place to meet and interact with others and also volunteer and explore your own ideas.

SUMS is just one of the many societies available at the university.

Recruitment events

Open days, workshops, and taster sessions give prospective students a firsthand glimpse into university life, allowing them to experience engaging lectures, interact with inspiring faculty and explore the facilities. These events demystify mathematics, highlight its relevance across industries and demonstrate the supportive, dynamic environment available.

The university has a number of events throughout the year and we’re always looking for students to help.
