Family Law Clinic

Get free legal advice on family law matters.

Free legal advice

Our Family Law Clinic offers pro bono (free) family law advice to members of the public. This service is for people who cannot afford to pay privately for legal advice and cannot access legal aid. Advice is provided by student advisers, under the supervision of qualified lawyers, and consists of a one-off advice meeting and follow-up written advice.

Who do we help?

We may be able to help you if:

  • you cannot afford to pay privately for a one-off legal advice meeting
  • you cannot access legal aid, and
  • your case is assessed as being suitable for the Clinic.

What kinds of family law problem can we advise on?

  • divorce
  • dissolution of a civil partnership
  • finances on family breakdown (we can only give general advice on finances, such as the options available, powers of the court and process for resolving disputes. We cannot advise on the terms of the financial settlement you should be seeking nor whether an agreement you have reached with your ex-partner is fair)
  • child arrangements (such disputes over contact, living arrangements or relocation)
  • parental responsibility
  • special guardianship
  • legal parenthood.
