Education (part time) MA structure and modules

The part-time MA is designed to suit busy education professionals such as teachers, leaders and support staff.

Part-time MA structure and modules (2024 entry)

The part-time MA is for you if you work or volunteer for at least five hours a week in education or a related field. Taught sessions take place on selected Wednesday twilights over two years. Your learning is rooted in your own professional practice and interests.

You may be able to import credit from prior academic or professional learning. This would be discussed at interview.

Starting your part-time MA with no prior credit

If you’re a teacher without any prior study at Sussex, you may complete this course in two years.

The typical part-time MA structure, if you’re starting your degree with no prior credit, is as follows:

Year 1

Year 2

Starting your part-time MA with prior credit/PGCE

If you’ve studied for your PGCE at Sussex in the last five years, you may add to your 60 Masters credits. Before enrolling on the part-time MA, you will need to have completed a continuing professional development (CPD) module worth 30 Masters credits before applying for the part-time MA.

The typical part-time MA structure, if you’re starting your degree with 60 Masters credits and have completed a 30-credit CPD module, is as follows:

Year 1

  • Unpacking Professional Knowledge

Year 2

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
