Software

Find out about the software you might need to use, and how to obtain it.

Office computers are run by IT Services, and as a general rule you should obtain software through them. Widely-used software will be installed as standard, and more specialist software can be accessed via the Start menu (see the ITS page on staff workstations for details).

Lab computers are maintained by the technician in charge of your lab (Daniel for the Cognitive, Behavioural, and Clinical Neuroscience groups and Martha for the Developmental, Clinical and Social groups). You can install software if you have administrative rights, or contact us for help.

Computers in teaching rooms are maintained by ITS and have a standard image. Changes to this are covered in the annual software review covered by ITS, and must be requested in advance. We regret that we are unable to install software for you on an ad-hoc basis in these rooms.

Commonly requested programs

Find out about the most commonly requested software and programs:

SPSS and AMOS (including license codes) to install on your own device, from ITS.

Matlab available from ITS.

Notes on using Qualtrics

Endnote available at a reduced price for personal use.

Inquisit: contact your lead technician who will set you up an account.

Sona: see the Sona help pages.

Specialist research software

Access to some specialist software (such as Presentation, MPlus, and EPrime) is available upon request. Please contact your lead technician (Daniel for Cognitive, Behavioural, and Clinical Neuroscience and Martha for Developmental, Clinical and Social) to discuss how you can go about installing these, and how whether a license will be required.

If you find you regularly need to install non-standard software, you may wish to apply for admin rights on your ITS machine by visiting the self-admin page.

Ordering software

In special cases, we may be able to order research software that is not available through the University and that we don't already have a license for. In this case, your lab would generally be expected to fund the purchase, and we would ask you to check there isn't an existing program that could do the same thing already available.

To discuss this, contact your lead technician: Daniel for the Cognitive, Behavioural, and Clinical Neuroscience groups and Martha for the Developmental, Clinical and Social groups.
