Emily’s story

“It’s incredible to think about all the ways law impacts our everyday lives. From the groceries we buy at the supermarket to the programmes we watch on TV, legal frameworks shape the world around us.
I initially wanted to train as a paramedic, but realised I could make a broader impact by exploring the wider legal processes affecting patients and their recovery. I decided to study Law and went to lots of Open Days, but Sussex stood out because it immediately felt like home. I met supportive tutors and likeminded students who were exactly the kind of people I wanted to learn and debate with.
Every year of my degree was different, and there were lots of opportunities to gain practical experience. I became a Legal Companion through the extracurricular CLOCK programme, which is a great way to support local communities. We listened to their concerns about the litigation process, helped them to understand complex forms, and signposted them to useful services.
I’d always wanted to study abroad and spent my third year at Waseda University in Tokyo. The experience was truly everything I’d hoped for. Comparing perspectives with classmates from around the world, I also visited as many cities as I could and made lifelong friends.
In my final year, I applied for the Law Clinic module, where students support the public to address issues that require legal advice. Working with a local firm, we interviewed clients before puzzling out their problems and identifying the best course of action. I worked in the Housing Law Clinic, so we explored areas like disputes between neighbours or negligent landlords. It was a great way to experience life as a solicitor, and even counts towards the SQE assessment!
Above all, Sussex helped me to understand how much of a positive impact you can make as a legal practitioner. It can be a challenging path, but these experiences have encouraged me to work hard and keep going.”
