Why is war and conflict endemic in the Middle East? Why are there so many authoritarian states in the Middle East? What is the relation between Islam and politics? How do Middle Eastern women challenge gender hierarchy?
This module examines modern politics and society in the Middle East through a perspective that is sensitive to international, social and political dynamics.
You will:
- critically survey main theoretical approaches to Middle East politics
- examine the historical and international dynamics and outcomes of modern state-formation in the region
- conduct an in-depth analysis of the Kurdish Question, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Iranian Revolution.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
