Reflecting on Professional Knowledge in Early Years (with EYTS) (16401X)
30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Spring teaching
This module integrates both University- and school-based learning.
By the end of the module, you’ll be able to:
- demonstrate your professional knowledge, understanding, criticality and skills as a reflective practitioner
- verbally articulate how research, policy and practice from working with expert colleagues in schools has informed your development
- identify ongoing targets for professional development.
You are specifically required to draw on scholarship and pedagogic theory, and evidence how a specific area of pedagogy has informed your practice and impacted on children’s learning through a series of ‘learning moments’ over the training year. Through this focus, you will articulate your understanding of the EYITT curriculum and how it has been embedded in placement practice.
You are introduced to current developments, initiatives and professional issues in education. You are expected to critically reflect on the intersection between theoretical positions, your own classroom practice and observations and the guidance offered by expert colleagues.
You’ll have opportunities to:
- explore issues and ideas with tutors and in peer learning situations
- discuss ideas and receive feedback.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 20 hours of contact time and about 280 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
