30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Spring teaching

This module will examine current research relating to the nature of ideology and its role in society and politics. The research is often undertaken by faculty members from different disciplines and traditions.

You will explore your own research interests in relation to the diverse current perspectives offered by faculty. And you will write your research paper in the area that interests you most. Specific topics will vary according to the research of the faculty members teaching the module. Possible topics may be drawn (for example) from classical and contemporary debates over the nature, causes and effects of ideology in the broadest sense. Topics may include:

  • the function of ideology
  • critical theory
  • false consciousness
  • the relationship between identity and belief
  • public opinion and democracy
