Contemporary Issues in Childhood and Youth: Research and Practice (894L5)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Autumn teaching

This is a research-led module, where we join the dots between theory, research and practice.

We consider and study different approaches to evidence generation, and the degree to which policy and practice is evidence informed. You will be taught by scholars whose current and recent research is making a local, national and global impact, including in the fields of:

  • child and youth safeguarding
  • childhood statelessness
  • youth justice
  • digital risk and e-safety
  • the politics of the family.

Over the course of the module, you will learn to critically examine how policy and practice frame children’s vulnerabilities and responsibility for their care and protection. The module is built around five core concepts that you will employ as critical tools:

  • participation
  • child-centredness
  • criticality
  • vulnerability
  • responsibility.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
