Student Code of Conduct

Our Code of Conduct lays out what we expect from you during any Sussex Inspires programme events.

Expected behaviour

You will be expected to behave responsibly and respect the rights of other students and staff for the duration of the Sussex Inspires programme. There will be zero tolerance of any harassment, bullying, breach of the programme's rules and regulations, or breaking the law.

Participation in our events requires responsible behaviour from you, and we expect you to show respect towards other participants and staff at all times. If your behaviour is inappropriate in any way, staff will immediately warn you of this and may stop your participation in the event. We may also report any inappropriate behaviour to your school or college.

In-person events

For health and safety reasons the following rules and regulations will be in operation during in-person events:

  • you must not purchase alcohol or cigarettes, nor bring, use or consume alcohol, or any illegal substance whilst attending The Sussex Inspires programme.
  • smoking and vaping are not allowed in buildings.
  • mobile phones must be on silent for the sessions and workshops.
  • you must not leave the campus without permission from appropriate University of Sussex staff.
  • you are expected to follow any emergency procedure, including fire drills, as directed.
  • you are expected to abide by the University’s e-safety policy regarding use of computer facilities and logins.
  • when undertaking specific activities, staff will explain any additional rules and regulations that may apply. It is expected that you will adhere to them for your own health and safety, and that of other students and staff.
  • you must not share the Sussex Inspire web page with other students, this page is for those on the Sussex Inspires programme only.
  • you are expected to attend all Sussex Inspires events. If you are unable to attend, please contact Inspires@sussex.ac.uk to let us know.
  • you will need to notify your school/college if you are going to be absent from a lesson due to participating in an activity from The University of Sussex Inspires programme.
  • do not ask or give any personal contact details such as full name, phone number, address social media handles or email address.
  • you will not arrange a face-to-face meeting with anyone you meet online or in-person through the Sussex Inspires programme.

If you have any concerns, or believe that someone has broken the guidelines above, then let a member of staff know immediately by emailing inspires@sussex.ac.uk.

Online events

The Sussex Inspires programme has currently suspended all live online sessions however if we do resume live online events, please see rules that apply:

  • you must not share the link to or forward details of the online activity with anyone else. Please do not share login details with any other Sussex Inspires programme student. If you are not sure of the details for an event please email us at inspires@sussex.ac.uk
  • you must not take photographs or recordings of your screen or share any images of the online activity with anyone else; this is for your safety as well as the safety of other participants and staff.
  • you must log into sessions on Zoom using the email you provided to the University of Sussex Inspires Programme team when you first registered. If you want to change this at any time please email us to let us know.
  • you will be responsible for the language you use, and must only post comments that you would feel comfortable knowing anyone could read.
  • you will not send anyone material that could be considered threatening, bullying, harmful, offensive or illegal.
  • you must use your first name only in any online activity if requested.
  • when participating in live sessions and you are using your camera and audio, you must make sure you’re in a suitable environment; this is for your safety as well as the safety of other participants. The Sussex Inspires programme reserves the right to disable your camera and/or audio at any time.

If you have experienced online abuse or are worried about the way someone has been communicating online, you can report this to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection police centre (CEOP).
