Hello Everyone, Welcome to this January "mini-edition" of the Sussex Researcher. We hope you all had good a great break over the festive season; in the RSO, we had a great "time out" with our families, have recharged our energy levels (despite getting the colds that are doing the rounds!), and are rearing to go - so much so that we couldn't wait to the normal February newsletter to tell you about some of the things we've been working on since the start of December!
- Our "biggest" news is that we've been reorganising and revamping our web pages. We felt we had great range of useful content, but even we found it tricky to find things sometime - we hope you like the new layout.
- We've also got the majority of our Spring Programme organised and ready to take bookings. So following on from any thoughts you might have had about your career over, or returning from, the break - why not peruse and sign up for some of Organisational Development, the Researcher Development Programme, or the RSO workshops and events that will help you develop yourself and progress your career the way you want it to go in 2020?
- Shortly before Christmas, Vitae briefed their members about the four themes they will be centering their annual programme around in 2020 - and we are delighted to see this includes "improving research culture" and putting a "spotlight on researcher careers."
- Finally, we have our second research staff "induction" lunch of this academic year coming up on January 27th. If you are a new starter, or if you have not managed to make it to a welcome lunch before, please feel free to join us!
So happy 2020 everyone - we look forward to seeing you all soon! Best wishes, The Research Staff Office Team (Hayley Cordingley and Alex Aghajanian)

Sector news: Vitae share Annual programme themes in December members briefing We are delighted to share an excerpt from the Vitae members briefing circulated in December: "As we’re drawing 2019 to a close, I’d like to take the opportunity to highlight the four themes that our annual programme will centre around throughout the year ahead.
Annual programme themes
- We will be working with our members across the world, within the UK and Europe, on improving research culture
- We will look at the underpinning competencies and behaviours of open-research, collaboration, responsible research and innovation through the theme research in a connected world
- We will be supporting researcher developers with their CPD and providing development opportunities, as well as focusing on reward and recognition in the future of researcher development as a profession
- We will put a spotlight on researcher careers, exploring the varied potential career paths that doctoral candidates and research staff take in their career, as well as investigating career tracking.
As the annual programme unfolds, we’ll keep you informed of announcements, activities, initiatives and resources relating to these themes. There will be lots of opportunities to get involved so keep an eye on your inbox for more Vitae member briefings."
