University of Sussex retains HR Excellence in Research Award for researchers’ career development The Research Staff Office are delighted to announce that the University of Sussex has retained the HR Excellence in Research (HREiR) Award for the eighth year running for the quality of support offered to researchers as they develop their careers. The award recognises the measures universities take to ensure great working conditions and career development opportunities for research staff. Professor Keith Jones, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) said: “It is a fantastic achievement to retain this award for the eighth year, as a result of the hard work and focus of teams and colleagues across the University of Sussex. Congratulations to everyone who continues to champion the career development of our researchers. “Realising career potential is so important for all of our colleagues, and we can be very proud to be part of a community that supports and celebrates excellence in development." Granted by the European Commission, the award gives researchers confidence that the institution is committed to supporting their career development, and we are proud to be one of the 96 UK institutions which currently hold the award. UK-based organisations retain the award by implementing the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

Research with Impact Day celebrates real-world impact of Sussex research The University recently hosted a major event dedicated to building and celebrating the real-world impact of Sussex research: the Research with Impact Day on Tuesday June 7, organised by the Research Quality and Impact Team and the Research Staff Office More than 100 attendees from across the University - including academic staff, doctoral researchers, and Professional Services staff who support research - gathered for a day of workshops, panel discussions and training sessions, culminating with a celebratory reception and the presentation of the Research with Impact Awards. Sessions included workshops on integrating impact into funding applications, achieving impact through knowledge exchange, pursuing policy impact, and increasing the visibility of research. The emphasis throughout the event was on researchers learning from one another, as well as from the Professional Services colleagues who support researchers with knowledge exchange and commercialisation, liaising with policymakers, and reaching broader audiences. During the event, Research Staff had a special opportunity to present their achievements, research and activities in a series of marketplace stalls. An award for the best Showcase Stall was presented to Shore-C as part of the evening award ceremony.

Develop research for BBC platforms: New Generation Thinkers 2023 This prestigious scheme allows 60 early career researchers to develop programmes for the BBC. If selected, you’ll workshop ideas with BBC producers, get media and public engagement training and a platform for informing and influencing public opinion, policy and practice. This scheme is looking for up-and-coming early career researchers who want to share ideas with the largest possible audience. 60 applicants will be invited to BBC workshops, from which 10 will be selected as New Generation Thinkers. Thinkers will then experience a year of focused activity and development from the BBC and AHRC. Closing date: 22 September 2022

Career Management for Early Career Academic Researchers - Online Course Explore different career options and understand what you want from a career Being an early career academic researcher, whether you’re a doctoral student or research staff, can be challenging: should you pursue further academic research? What skills will help you progress in an academic career? What other career options are open to you? Joining this free online course, developed by the University of Glasgow, will help you answer these questions and more, considering how to manage you career and reflecting on what you want out of a career. You will be encouraged to consider different career options, both within and outside academic research, and build your confidence in marketing yourself in applications and interviews.

If applying for funding, remember to check funders' eligibility criteria carefully and discuss the opportunity with your host institution/department prior to preparing any applications.

Ernest Rutherford fellowships
These enable early-career researchers from the UK and overseas to establish an independent research programme. The total budget is £6 million to fund up to 10 fellowships lasting for five years.
Deadline for Applications: 13th September 2022

Future leaders fellowships
These enable early-career researchers and innovators to transition to or establish their research or innovation independence in any area supported by UKRI. Fellowships are tenable for four years and there is no limit to the amount of funding applicants can request.

Swiss postdoctoral fellowships
These support early-career researchers in coming to Switzerland to conduct postdoctoral research. Fellowships include the fellow’s salary and research costs up to CHF 24,000 per year for one to two years.
