Message from the Research Staff Office |
Hello Everyone,
I hope you all had a restful Easter break. This is the first newsletter since the CROS survey closed, so I must say a big thank you to all of you that completed the survey. We had a tremendous response (see below) and we are now working hard to analyse the results in order to inform University activity to support researchers over the coming months and years.
We are looking forward to this month's Doctoral School BBQ on 25th May and look forward to seeing you there. Tickets are going fast so book your place at the link below to ensure you can enjoy the tasty BBQ food on the day. It's always a good atmosphere and a chance to meet other researchers from across the University.
Thanks to all of you that applied for a talk for Spotlight @ Sussex Impact Day. It is set to be a great event, the panel meets next week to select speakers and more information about the session will be available on the Spotlight pages soon.
Best wishes,
Natalie James (Research Staff Officer)

Creativity and Innovation Tools for Career Success |
Thursday 18th May, 13.30 - 16.00 - Book a place
"Creative Problem Solving" and "Ideation" techniques are frequently used in the process of innovation - to generate novel ideas and solutions that address unmet needs.
This workshop will introduce you to a range of tools and principles used in the process and show you how they can help you succeed in your career (whether you want that to be in academia, a start-up, industry, business or public sector) by helping you to:
- generate exciting new (fundable) research ideas
- translate your research outcomes into business propositions
- think laterally about the way you job hunt

Spotlight on...Dr Erica Consterdine |
Research Fellow in Politics and Geography
Why people migrate is a really curious thing to me
I'm interested in the phenomena of migration and as my career has developed I've focused on policy making and the unintended effects of it.
My post doc is for the TEMPER project which is investigating the difference between temporary and permanent migration. We have been interviewing temporary Australian and Romanian immigrants to understand whether temporary integration is possible. We're also looking at policy implementation, which fascinates me. Last year I interviewed policy makers in the Home Office to understand the main gaps between policy and actual outcomes.
My book Labour's Immigration Policy: The Making of the Migration State is being published with Palgrave Macmillan within a Public Policy series and is going straight to paper back which is exciting.
