An Early Career Researcher (ECR) perspective
Meet Dr. Nicholas Souter, a UKRI-funded research fellow at our school.
“I study the effect of working patterns, including effects of transitioning to a 4 day working week, on the mind and brain. I work alongside my principal investigator Dr Charlotte Rae on the Sussex 4 Day Week team. This involves analysis of MRI brain scan data, including data collected here at Sussex at the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre (CISC). I also work with colleagues to look at the effect of working patterns on things like sleep quality, mental health, and job satisfaction.
Working at the University of Sussex has allowed me access not only to cutting-edge equipment and facilities needed for this project, but also colleagues with expertise in neuroimaging, machine learning, and statistics. In this way, the School of Psychology provides opportunities for collaboration which allows my research to be the best it can be.
The School of Psychology is an inclusive and welcoming environment, hosting a range of school-wide social events, training courses, and seminar series with diverse focuses. These events allow for regular upskilling and feedback, both formal and informal, which has been central to my work. Beyond this, the School offers a mentoring scheme specifically for ECRs, providing further opportunities for support.”
