Research

My research focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, with an attention to Early Modern England (c. 1485-1651). I have published on themes such as counsel and temporality, and figures including Thomas More, William Shakespeare and Thomas Hobbes. Upcoming projects include work on the little-studied 16th-century writer Anne Dowriche and the concept of 'the opportune moment' in the Renaissance period.

I co-direct the Centre for the Study of Intellectual History and am an active member of the Centre for Early Modern and Medieval Studies at the University of Sussex. I also co-direct an international interdisciplinary research network  on the study of 'kairos' or the 'opportune moment'. I am a member of the Politics of Counsel research network at St. Andrews. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a member of the Renaissance Society of America and Sixteenth-Century Society.
