Biography
After completing a BA at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and a BPhil and DPhil in Oxford, at Balliol and Nuffield respectively, I began my academic career as a lecturer at Birmingham University. I came to Sussex in 1979 as a member of the American Studies department, where I taught and researched American society and foreign policy for over 40 years. During that time I was Dean of Humanities from 2002 to 2009. I also spent almost ten years working intermittently on secondment to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. My final secondment ended in 2013, at which point I was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship for a project on US foreign policy. I returned to teaching in 2017 and took voluntary severance from the University in 2021. Since retiring I continue to conduct research as Professor Emeritus.
