A real life Fairytale

Alissia Lakeland

Inspired by personal visions in childhood through adulthood, Alissia Lakeland interprets the fine line between reality and imagination. The book is a real life fairytale that talks to fantasy and escapism, showcasing how mythical creatures would exist in human life and homes.

The beauty of femininity within mythical creatures, such as, fairies and mermaids is an important theme of this work. The series of images celebrate the confidence of embodying a female mythical character and embracing female stereotypes within fairytales.

Lakeland takes inspiration from different artists like Juno Calypso, Petra Collins and Ben Giles to understand surrealism. Printed on risograph paper with hand drawn details by the artist, the intention is to showcase surrealism through cosplay and representation. The use of risograph prints add a dreamlike aesthetic creating tactility and texture.
