JSPS London symposium 2024
3-5 December 2024
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science held a small group meeting on “The role of culture for understanding social stratification, economic inequality and societal development”.
The meeting was held at the University of Sussex. Bringing together social scientists from Asia, Europe and South America, we explored how culture influences both the affordance of social stratification and inequality and its effects.
We discussed how institutions, such as schools and workplaces, shaped by cultural norms, can either reduce or reinforce inequality. By bringing together diverse research, our aim was to gain new insights into contemporary global challenges related to social stratification and inequality.
