Legacy Collection Policy

This policy provides a framework for the management of the Library’s Legacy Collection within the context of the Library’s Content Strategy.

 1. Scope

The Legacy Collection forms part of the Heritage Collections at the University of Sussex Library that comprise:

  • Legacy Collection
  • Special Collections
  • University archives

The Legacy Collection comprises distinct printed materials that may be unique or rare, but that fall outside of the University’s Special Collections holdings. Strengths of the collection lie in the areas of:

  • Gender studies and feminism
  • Popular and counter cultures
  • Post WW2 world order
  • Political movements and parties
  • Trade unions
  • Social movements
  • Social welfare

2. Responsibilities

Collection development

The Legacy Collection will not be actively developed as a live collection. No new material will be acquired for this collection.

Disposal

The Library holds the right to dispose of any materials that are not considered suitable for permanent retention. We reserve the right to transfer materials to a more appropriate collection should circumstances change and in the light of professional advice.

Preservation and conservation

As appropriate, Legacy Collection items will be placed in protective packaging. Conservation treatment of items may be commissioned on a case-by-case basis. Any items that are too fragile for storage and use at the Library will be considered for transfer to the University’s Special Collections at The Keep. Preservation and conservation activities will be carried out in accordance with the Library's Preservation Policy for Special Collections and Legacy Collection.

Access

Legacy items are for use inside the Library building and, as necessary, at The Keep by prior arrangement.

In all other respects, access to Legacy Collection items will be governed by the same conditions as the Library’s Special Collections Access Policy.
