IT Services staff are working to restore services following an incident which affected all IT provided systems, networking and some off-campus services.
We believe this to have been caused by a component failure within our Data Centre and are working hard to bring back services as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your patience.
UPDATE: 13 Nov 2018 - 9:53am
Staff in IT Services are working to restore systems following an electrical power failure during the storm last night.
You can now log in to desktop computers, but logins will be slow and several services will not be available.
Here are the latest details:
- Our monitoring systems informed us at 8pm last night that there had been a major interruption to services.
- IT Services staff have been on campus throughout the night working with our support partners. Services such as student wi-fi, internet access, Student and Staff email, Canvas and Box are now working normally.
- Our focus at the moment is to restore outstanding services including staff wi-fi and printing.
- The High Performance Cluster is not currently available as it is dependent on other services which must be restored first.
- The IT Service Desk is operational but only able to run limited services.
- Damage to the data centre is significant. We will restore normal service as quickly as possible but it may take more than a day to restore all services fully.
Date / time: 12 Nov 2018, 20:00 (ongoing)
Reason for downtime: Damage to core services due to lightning strike
IT Services change/incident number: 1001515
UPDATE: 13 Nov 2018 - 11:41am
Staff in ITS are still working to restore services following last night’s damage. The following services remain affected:
- Campus wi-fi is working intermittently. If you can connect to eduroam then your connection should work normally, but you may have trouble establishing a connection. Please keep trying.
- The Finance System is currently unavailable.
- Printing is still unavailable.
- Other systems such as central database access, Oracle Web Reports (yellow screens), lecture capture and research systems (such as the HPC) are unavailable.
UPDATE: 13 Nov 2018 - 2:18pm
Staff in ITS continue to work to restore a full range of services.
Services with ongoing issues:
- There are ongoing issues with assigning addresses on eduroam. If you try to connect, it’s likely that your device won’t be assigned a network address and you won’t get online. We are implementing a workaround and hope to restore normal wi-fi service soon.
- Printing
- The Finance System
- Admin Remote
- Lecture Capture
- Research Systems are being systematically restored. Details will be communicated via hpc-users@sussex.ac.uk (please contact Jeremy Maris if you’d like to be added to this list).
We do not expect the HPC service to be restored today.
Restored recently:
- Cognos and Oracle Web Forms (yellow screens)
- HR systems
- Research Systems: LifeSci Stores; BSMS DICOM archive; Dotmatics Chemistry browser.
UPDATE: 13 Nov 2018 - 3:49pm
Staff in ITS continue to work to restore the full range of services.
Services with ongoing issues:
- Printing - this is our current top priority.
- The Finance System. Most services have now been restored but you may find that it’s difficult to log on. Where possible, please use the web client if you’re having trouble accessing the Finance System.
- Admin Remote is returning to normal but there are still intermittent problems with access.
- Lecture Capture is returning to normal. Lectures recorded today will become available as the system processes the backlog.
- Research Systems are still being tested and restored.
Restored recently:
- eduroam seems to be working fully now
UPDATE: 13 Nov 2018 - 4:52pm
We’re pleased to say that most services have been restored following the damage to the University data centre last night.
Services with ongoing issues:
- Printing - this is our current top priority and we are working closely with our support partners to restore printing. Unfortunately, we don’t expect this to be restored today?
- Research Systems are still being tested and restored.
Restored recently:
- The Finance System is now working normally
- Lecture Capture. It may take a while for all lectures recorded today to become available.
We are also working to ensure the resilience of the services that we’ve restored.

We’re pleased to say that the printing service has been restored following the damage to the University data centre last night.

Core services have been restored following the damage to the University’s data centre.
If you’re unable to access your G Drive, please log out and back in again. This should allow your computer to refresh its connection and restore your access.
Our highest priority is now the restoration of the High Performance Cluster. This is a demanding service which depends on a range of core services, so restoring it was not possible until now.
We are continuing to review our systems and restore redundancy and resilience.
