SPSS fails to activate and displays a 'License not valid' message


Please follow these steps to correct the problem.

  1. Close SPSS, if running.
  2. Open File Explorer from the Start Menu.
  3. Navigate to folder 'C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS Statistics'.
  4. Delete the lservrc file.
  5. In the same folder, copy file echoid.dat to the Desktop.
  6. Open the file you copied to the Desktop, in Notepad.
  7. Change the value in the file from 0x004 to 0x008.
  8. Save the file.
  9. Now copy the file from the Desktop back to 'C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS Statistics'.
  10. Now start SPSS from the Start Menu.
  11. Click Launch License Wizard.
  12. In the Wizard, select Authorized user license.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Enter the code published on this page: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/its/services/software/owncomputer/spss
  15. Click the Add button.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Wait for the Internet Authorization to complete and then click Next.
  18. Click Finish.
  19. Click Restart.
