What is a RemoteApp and how do I use it?

The RemoteApp shortcut or start menu iconSome programs used at Sussex are RemoteApps. You can identify them by the icon in the start menu or the shortcut you use to open it.

When you open a RemoteApp, it appears in a window on your computer but the program itself is running on a remote computer.

When you open a RemoteApp, it appears in a window on your computer, but the program itself is running on a central server.

If you close the window, it disappears from your screen but the app is still running on the remote computer.

If you close the window using the X in the corner, it disappears from your screen but the program continues to run on the remote server. This can be a useful feature because the next time you open it, providing the server has been running continuously in the meantime, you can pick up from exactly where you left off.

Stopping the program to fix common problems
If you want to come out of the program entirely, you need to:

  1. click the RemoteApp window so it’s on top of any other windows
  2. hold down CTRL+ALT+END
  3. choose Log off

This is worth trying if you’re having trouble with a RemoteApp. Logging out in this way, then re-opening the application, resolves a lot of common problems.
