How can I restore a file I have accidentally deleted from a shared (group) drive?

If you are using a Windows PC you can restore files accidentally deleted from a shared group drive (sometimes referred to as the G:drive) using a facility built into the system.

Using Windows Explorer browse to the folder which used to contain the file you accidentally deleted. Right-click on the folder and from the pop-up menu that appears, select the option Restore previous versions:

Restore Previous Versions menu option

This opens the Properties window for that folder with the Previous Versions tab selected. This shows a list of the back-up versions of the folder available, sorted by date and time with the most recent version at the top.

Properties window - Previous Versions tab

Scroll through the list until you find the version you need (when the missing file still existed). Once you've found it, highlight the folder name and click on Open:

Open backup version of folder

This will open a Windows Explorer window displaying the contents of the folder at that time (i.e. in the past) which should include your missing file. You can copy the file from this window onto your desktop (or elsewhere).

Close the Windows Explorer window normally and the Properties window by clicking OK.

You can now copy the file from your desktop (or wherever you saved it) back into the current version of the shared group drive folder.
