Following on from last year’s ‘Talking Global Health’ event, we are hosting ‘Doing Global Health – in the context of Crisis, Conflict and Disaster’ an event held at the University of Sussex on 17th July 2012.

Doing Global Health – in a context of crisis, conflict, and disaster:

From the financial crisis and climate change, through to natural disasters like the earthquakes in Haiti and Pakistan – crises, conflicts and disasters pose new challenges for those doing global health. How do such crises shape global health? How can the challenges they give rise to be overcome? And how can global health move beyond emergency responses to a more sustainable approach? This one-day conference will explore the multifaceted connections between global health and crises, conflicts and disasters.

Bringing together experts on water and sanitation, neglected tropical diseases, food security, sexual violence, climate change and the international politics of health, the conference will share new insights from ongoing projects, will facilitate in-depth discussion through expert-led break-out sessions, and will provide a networking opportunity for those working in the field of global health.  We hope to include short presentations from selected delegates (please tell us about your interests and activities on the registration form) and posters are encouraged.

The conferences keynote speaker is Anthony Costello, Professor of International Child Health and Director of the UCL Institute for Global Health, who will be discussing ‘Crisis and resilience in global health - community approaches to survival, food security and climate change'.

Other sessions include talks by leading experts on water and sanitation, neglected tropical diseases, food security, sexual violence, climate change and the international politics of health. These themes will be explored in greater detail in facilitated discussions held in the afternoon.

This event will be jointly hosted by the Centre for Global Health Policy, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and the University of Brighton.
