Matched gift helps fund a new microscope
Find out how a gift from an alumnus has enabled Prof George Giamas to purchase a vital piece of equipment for his lab.

Thanks to the kind support of the Friends of the University of Sussex, Prof. Georgios Giamas has been able to purchase an ExoView R100 microscope for his laboratory. The advanced microscope includes a high specification camera and associated data acquisition and analysis software.
The generous gift originated from alumnus Dr Stuart Bailey (DPhil 2007) and was matched by further contribution from his employer, making this important purchase possible.

The ExoView R100 will aid Georgios and his colleagues in their work developing a liquid-biopsy to spot deep tissue cancers. The implications of this mean that instead of taking a tissue sample, doctors could take a small blood sample and test for a range of biomarkers that can help identify the presence of cancer. This approach would bring numerous benefits: it is less invasive than a traditional tissue biopsy (which is very difficult to take in the case of brain tumours), it is more cost-effective, it generates results faster and requires less work than traditional diagnostic tests.
