Supporting forced migrants

See how the University of Sussex supports forced migrants, asylum and at-risk scholars.

English for Refugees scheme

We offer a number of free places on the Intensive English programme to people from forced migrant backgrounds on our English for Refugees scheme. Students on the scheme receive 15 hours of English language tuition a week over the course of 22 weeks, with a view to progressing into higher education and/or work.

The scheme is run in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council.

Going to the University of Sussex literally changed my life. The Intensive English course is something that I really enjoy taking. My professors are amazing, and I'm surrounded by incredible people.”Former English for refugee scheme student

Sussex Migration Law Clinic

The Sussex Migration Law Clinic is situated in the University of Sussex Law School. Under the supervision of a registered solicitor or barrister, our final year law students offer immigration and asylum legal advice on a pro bono (cost-free) basis to members of the public who require advice in this area of law.

Since it began taking clients in February 2019, the clinic has provided clients with advice and assistance in relation to asylum claims, including appeals to the Upper Tribunal and fresh claims, applications for leave to remain on the basis of family life under Article 8 ECHR, applications for family reunion and citizenship.

Sussex STAR (Student Action for Refugees) Group

We have an active and engaged STAR Group at Sussex who campaign for equal access to education and support forced migrants in becoming part of the local community in Brighton.

Find out more on their Facebook page.

International student support

If you are a current student at Sussex on a Tier 4/Student visa, and you are considering applying for asylum (or have already applied), you should contact an International Student Adviser. Although the advisers will not be able to give immigration advice on asylum or the process of claiming asylum, they can provide information on how your current Student visa will be affected. They will also direct you to other members of the University who need to know about changes to your immigration status in the UK and who can provide guidance on how to maintain your student status while any asylum applications are being processed. There are also a range of other support services available at the University which current students can access.
