Job description
Having challenged convention since its foundation in 1961, the University of Sussex exists to change the lives of our students, to deliver progressive and rigorous research based on cutting-edge expertise, and to make the world a better place through partnerships with external bodies. Building on our strong foundations, we have been reimagining Sussex’s pioneering spirit to ensure it is fit for new times and a new generation.
Following the appointment of Professor Sasha Roseneil as Vice-Chancellor and President, Sussex has reaffirmed its commitment to creating and sustaining a cohesive and inclusive community with equality, diversity and inclusion at its core, alongside ensuring that the University is a leading player in the transition to a more equitable, environmentally sustainable, post-carbon future.
To ensure we are able to deliver on these ambitions and navigate an ever-changing policy, economic, and cultural landscape, we are seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to work closely with the Vice-Chancellor, the senior team, and the whole Sussex community.
Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the CFO will share collective responsibility for setting strategic objectives and is accountable for the financial strategy and commercial activities of the University, leading the effective prioritisation of revenue and capital allocation, and driving financial and operating performance.
The CFO will sustain a culture of high performance and customer service, with clearly articulated and agreed goals, and will challenge the status quo in the planning and delivery of services, driving improvement and introducing new ways of working.
With unprecedented change in the higher education sector, this is an opportunity for an imaginative and ambitious board level finance professional to play a leadership role in shaping Sussex’s future, ensuring its continued success on the global stage.
The University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
