Sussex Clinical Legal Education

Sussex Law Clinics are the group of pro-bono legal projects run by the Law School, under the Clinical Legal Education module (M3033).  The Clinics provide free legal advice and public legal education to the local community.

Clinical Legal Education – or CLE for short – is a final year 30 credit option available to Law students. It combines theory and practice, where module students participate in lectures, seminars and workshops covering legal skills and public access to justice, and engage with clients looking at real-life legal problems. Students work in collaboration with academic leads, external practitioners, and advice organisations.

Students benefit from combining practical clinical law programmes with their traditional lecture / seminar teaching.  In our CLE module we aim to expand and enrich your legal education, offer valuable assistance to members of our community who are in need, and give you opportunities for development, including of your vocational skills, shadowing and work experience placements, which can be vital for your prospects after graduation.

More information on the clinic offerings can be found in the digital Law prospectus, and further details of the CLE module structure are on Canvas in the LLB Student Support pages

Students who wish to take the module in their final year must follow the pre-application process described on the Clinical Legal Education module page on the LLB Student Support Canvas site.  The application form itself will appear on this page throughout the pre-application window.

First and second years will be given opportunities to apply to volunteer within the Clinic office, or with our external partners, and those opportunities will be advertised to you via your Sussex email and announcements on the LLB Student Support canvas page.
