Migration Law Clinic
The Migration Law Clinic aims to offer migration and asylum legal advice on a pro bono (cost-free) basis to any individual who requires advice in this legal field and cannot afford to pay a legal practitioner. This is a new Clinic project which aims to start providing immigration advice from early 2019 onwards.
Background
Local and regional organisations, such as the Brighton and Hove City Council, Migrant English Project, Voices in Exile, Gatwick Detainee Welfare Group and the Brighton Housing Trust, have alerted us to an increasing and striking need for more and better legal advice in relation to migration and asylum, in light of the decreasing access to legal aid in relation to migration cases. We hope that this Clinic will help address to some extent these concerns, by assisting individuals with no other means to access legal advice. This Clinic also offers Sussex Law School students hands-on experience of complex legal issues in the important and in-demand area of legal practice of migration and asylum, thereby increasing their employability and providing a valuable set of transferrable skills.
What we do
We will be offering migration and asylum legal advice, which is facilitated and researched by students within the Law School, under the supervision of academics and legal practitioners supporting the Clinic. The Migration Law Clinic will offer 30-minute initial interviews at Sussex Law School, based at the University of Sussex campus, aimed at gathering the relevant facts. After that, where appropriate, clients will receive a letter of advice. Interviews will take place at the Freeman Building, University of Sussex campus, BN1 9QE. Free parking is available.

The service is open to the general public, including University of Sussex staff and students. If you are a current University of Sussex student in need of advice, we ask that you contact the Students’ Union or Student Experience in the first instance and they will refer you to the Migration Law Clinic where appropriate. The Migration Law Clinic will not be able to advise clients where their issue raises a conflict of interest.
