Introduction to Climate Justice

Climate justice approaches the causes and impacts of climate change in terms of social and historical inequities. This involves understanding how climate change intersects with existing racial, gendered and other inequalities, disproportionately impacting the poor and those least responsible for causing the problem.

This module introduces you to the concept of climate justice. It explores the colonial roots of the climate and ecological crises, and how they influence solutions proposed today. While designing campaigns that advocate alternatives to climate injustice, you will explore and analyse:

• carbon budgets
• links between fossil fuels and economic power
• calls for just recoveries and reparations. 

Module learning outcomes

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of climate justice and how it is reflected in different responses to climate change
• Identify and discuss relevant case studies that exemplify climate (in)justice.
• Recognise and describe relevant theories and concepts to analyse climate justice examples
• Design creative responses to climate justice to advocate for change.
