What are the big environmental problems of today? What are the root causes of those problems? How are environmental problems experienced differently around the world?
This module seeks to examine these questions, exploring the relationships between the environment and development. It examines historical perspectives on environment and development, illustrating continuities and changes in policies related to the environment. And it explores a number of key environmental questions such as:
- the impact of population change
- how global food systems impact the environment
- what approaches are being used to reduce global carbon emissions.
Module learning outcomes
- Knowledge of the relationships between environment and development.
- Awareness and understanding of key concepts and core debates in the study of environment and development.
- Knowledge of the core reading, with some appreciation of the subtlety of debates about environment and development, and of the underlying logic of different theoretical perspectives.
