The course covers the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing and aims to develop students' ability to communicate across cultures at pre-intermediate level in written and spoken English. It includes work on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and a range of reading and writing tasks. The course content will be according to Level B1+ which is situated over the level B1 (Threshold User) as defined in the Common European Framework.

Module learning outcomes

• Learners will be able to handle the main structures and functions of English with some confidence, demonstrating knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary, and use appropriate communicative strategies in a variety of social situations.
• Learners will be able to distinguish between main and subsidiary points, and between the general topic of a text and specific detail.
• They will be able to produce written texts of various types, showing the ability to develop an argument as well as describe or recount events.
• Learners will also be able to identify and make appropriate use of register, and the conventions of politeness and degrees of formality, as they are expressed through the language.
• When called upon to use the language in a variety of contexts, learners will be able to do so with a certain degree of independence.
• Learners will have developed greater flexibility and an ability to deal with the unexpected, relying less on fixed patterns of language and short utterances.
