This module gives you an introduction to the legal rules governing the acquisition and transfer of private rights in land. It covers aspects of the law which form the framework of landholding in England, and situates these rules in social, economic and environmental context.
Topics may include:
- the doctrines of estates and tenure
- definitions of “land” and “property”
- transfer of rights in land, and the role of equity and the trust
- land registration
- adverse possession
- leasehold estates
- rights in security
- third party rights (easements, freehold covenants)
- co-ownership.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate critical legal understanding of the framework of modern land law and knowledge of key principles and concepts
- Apply the knowledge and understanding gained to develop and sustain critical arguments on controversial points of land law and/or solve problems using appropriate techniques
- Locate and make appropriate use of relevant primary and secondary materials in researching written work
- Demonstrate written fluency in subject specific legal terminology
